Kiyomizu-dera hosts special "Night Special Viewings" throughout the seasons. A striking blue beam of light reaches toward the sky, symbolizing the mercy of Kannon-sama and creating a truly mystical atmosphere. Depending on when you visit, you can enjoy different breathtaking landscapes, such as spring cherry blossoms, the summer Sennichi-mairi service, or the vibrant autumn foliage.
The greatest charm lies in the harmony between the illuminated historic architecture and the surrounding nature. In spring, the soft pink cherry blossoms glow beautifully against the night, while in autumn, the vivid colors of the maple leaves are brought to life. The blue light beam directed toward the sky is a signature spiritual element of Kiyomizu-dera that leaves visitors in awe. Enjoy a truly special moment while looking out over the night view of Kyoto city from the temple's high terrace.
Night Special Viewings are held three times a year (Scheduled for 2026):
The venue is Kiyomizu-dera Temple on Mt. Otowa. While it is easily accessible from central Kyoto, crowds are expected during the night viewing hours, so using public transportation is highly recommended.
No advanced reservations are required for the Night Special Viewing. You can simply visit the temple directly during the operating hours. Since the themes change with the seasons—from cherry blossoms to summer rituals and autumn leaves—you can choose the scenery that best suits your preference.
As this is a nighttime event, please dress appropriately for the season. It can get quite chilly during the spring and autumn nights, so bringing a light jacket or wrap is recommended for your comfort.
