Event Overview

Kanda Yamakasa is a traditional festival held in Kanda Town, Fukuoka, as part of the Ura Shrine festivities. With a history spanning over 560 years, it was designated as a Prefectural Intangible Cultural Property in 1973. The festival features 14 massive floats (yamakasa) parading through the streets, culminating in a high-energy gathering in front of the Kanda Town Hall. This is far more than a simple parade; the 'Kenka Yamakasa'—where the floats collide with intense force—creates an overwhelming atmosphere of excitement and power.

Highlights and How to Enjoy

The true charm of Kanda Yamakasa lies in the 'transformation' and 'power' of the floats. Depending on the day, the floats change their appearance: from the 'Tomiyama' decorated with glowing lanterns, to the 'Noboriyama' adorned with colorful banners, and finally the most magnificent 'Iwayama'. The 'Iwayama' stands 15 meters tall, weighs over 4 tons, and features exquisite paper-covered rock decorations and beautiful 'Hote-hana' ornaments.

The climax is the 'Tsukiate' held in the plaza in front of the Town Hall. As nearly a thousand men move in unison, the 'Kenka Yamakasa' brings the floats into intense contact, creating a thunderous roar and a palpable heat that vibrates through the ground. It is a breathtaking display of modern energy meeting ancient tradition.

Schedule

The main event takes place on the first Sunday of October every year. The festival begins several days prior, progressing through the atmospheric night of the 'Tomiyama' and the colorful 'Noboriyama' before reaching the grand 'Iwayama' on the final day. In 2026, the main event is scheduled for October 4th. Since the appearance of the floats changes depending on the date, we recommend checking the schedule in advance to catch the most powerful moments.

The main event takes place at the plaza in front of the Kanda Town Hall in Fukuoka. You can reach the venue by a 15-minute walk from JR Kanda Station on the Nippo Main Line, or by taking a bus to the 'Kanda Town Hall East Exit' stop. As the area becomes extremely crowded, using public transportation is highly recommended.
