The Kiku Matsuri (Chrysanthemum Festival) held at Chuson-ji Temple in Hiraizumi, Iwate Prefecture, is a special event to enjoy the breathtaking beauty of late autumn. The temple grounds are adorned with hundreds of chrysanthemums carefully nurtured by local community members and children, adding a vibrant touch of color to the historic site. The greatest charm is the striking color contrast between the brilliant autumn leaves and the blooming chrysanthemums. You can enjoy about 500 beautiful plants, including styles such as Senrin (multi-layered), Kengai (weeping), and Bonsai. The natural palette of reds and yellows creates a breathtaking landscape as autumn deepens. We recommend a leisurely stroll to soak in the traditional Japanese aesthetic and the peaceful atmosphere.

The festival runs from October 20 to November 15.

On the opening day, October 20, the 'Kiku Matsuri Kaikyo Hoyo' (Opening Ceremony) will be held at the Chuson-ji Hondo (Main Hall) starting at 10:00. Be sure to visit to see the landscape evolve as the season progresses.

Venue & Access

The event takes place within the Chuson-ji temple grounds.

  • *By Train & Bus**: From JR Hiraizumi Station, you can walk to the temple or take a bus. It is approximately a 25-minute walk or a 5-minute bus ride from Hiraizumi Station.
  • *By Car**: Access is available via the Tohoku Expressway via the Ichinoseki IC or Hiraizumi-Sawasawa IC. While there are permanent parking lots near Chuson-ji, we recommend arriving early as parking can be crowded during the peak autumn foliage season.

Tips for Visitors

The Kiku Matsuri coincides with the peak season for autumn colors. To enhance your experience, consider visiting during the 'Koyo Ginga' (Autumn Foliage Galaxy) night illumination events to see the scenery in a magical light. The harmony between historic architecture and seasonal flora makes this a truly unique experience at Chusoji.

What to Bring, Clothing & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: Temperatures drop significantly between late October and November. Please bring warm clothing, such as a heavy jacket or fleece, to stay comfortable during the chilly mornings and evenings.

  • *Reservations**: No advance reservation is required for the Kiku Matsuri. However, to avoid crowds, visiting on weekday mornings is highly recommended.
