Known as the 'Inner Sanctum of Kyoto,' the Kifune area offers a spectacular autumn illumination event. The paths leading to Kifune Shrine, the surrounding traditional inns, and the Eizan Electric Railway tracks are bathed in the gentle, warm glow of lanterns. This creates a deeply mystical atmosphere where the natural beauty of the mountains meets the spiritual essence of ancient shrines.

The approach to Kifune Shrine (including the Honsha, Musya, and Okumiya shrines) and the surrounding traditional dining streets are lined with lanterns that beautifully highlight the autumn colors. The illuminated banks of the Kifune River at night offer a serene, breathtaking view that feels worlds away from everyday life.

The Eizan Railway 'Maple Tunnel'

One of the most iconic experiences is the 'Maple Tunnel'—a roughly 250m stretch between Ichihara and Ninose stations on the Eizan Electric Railway. During the event, the train lights are dimmed to allow passengers to view the glowing autumn leaves through the windows. For the best view, try the 'Kirara' panoramic train, which offers a more dynamic and immersive perspective.

Dining & Exploration in Kifune

On certain weekends and holidays, you may encounter handmade markets or live events near the shrines. The area is also famous for its seasonal cuisine; enjoy warm hot pots (nabe) or traditional Kyoto Kaiseki meals at local inns. After your meal, consider stopping at a cafe to enjoy Japanese sweets while taking in the scenery.

• *By Train**: The most seamless way to experience the 'Maple Tunnel' is via the Eizan Electric Railway, traveling through Ninose or Kibuneguchi Station.
• *By Bus**: You can access the area from Kyoto Station by taking the Kyoto Bus (Route 52) which connects Demachiyanagi Station to Kibuneguchi.
• *By Car**: The roads in the Kifune area are very narrow and parking is extremely limited. We highly recommend using public transportation.

• *Train Photography**: The Eizan Railway features a special moment where the interior lights are turned off. Be ready with your camera, and remember to turn off your flash to prevent reflections on the window glass.
• *Dining Reservations**: Many traditional inns in the Kifune area offer shuttle services to Kibuneguchi Station for guests with reservations (usually for groups of 2 or more). It is wise to check with your restaurant in advance.
• *What to Bring**: The temperature in Kifune drops significantly at night. Please bring a warm jacket or coat.
