Kawagoe Matsuri is a vibrant urban festival held in the heart of Kawagoe City, Saitama. Deeply influenced by the 'Tenka Matsuri' of Edo, this festival features grand, ornate floats (dashi) carrying intricate puppets, parading through the iconic Kurazukuri (warehouse-style) streets. With a history spanning over 370 years, the 'Kawagoe Hikawa Matsuri Float Procession' was inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2016. It remains a vital symbol of Japanese cultural heritage.
The most breathtaking moment is the 'Hikkawase'—a high-stakes showdown where multiple floats meet at street intersections. As the floats face off, the air fills with the powerful sounds of flutes, drums, and bells, creating an overwhelming spectacle of energy and scale. The night-time 'Hikkawase' is particularly magical; as lanterns illuminate the floats, the scene becomes a dynamic and dreamlike display of light and shadow. It is a perfect time to feel the heat and passion of the crowd.
The festival takes place over two days on October 17 and October 18.

Kawagoe Matsuri is a massive event that attracts hundreds of thousands of visitors. Because the streets around the float routes become extremely crowded, we recommend allowing plenty of extra time for travel.
