Katashina Valley (Fukiware Falls)

Overview

Located in Numata City, Gunma Prefecture, Fukiware Falls is a magnificent waterfall often called the 'Niagara of the Orient.' The 7-meter high and 30-meter wide falls create a dramatic spray of water that allows visitors to feel the raw power of nature. The landscape was formed by the erosion of tuff by the Katashina River over many years. The surrounding Katashina Valley offers a stunning display of geological beauty.

The main attraction is the dynamic flow of water. The sight of water cascading from multiple directions is breathtaking, and during summer, the natural mist provides a refreshing experience. Nearby, you can discover unique landmarks such as Masutobi Falls, the Hannya Rock (shaped like a demon mask), and the massive Byobu-iwa rock wall.

Walking along the maintained paths allows you to view the falls from various angles. The area is also steeped in local legend, including the story of the 'Ryugu-no-Wan' (Dragon Palace Bowl) at the base of the falls. Whether you visit for the fresh greenery of spring or the vibrant colors of autumn, the scenery is spectacular year-round.

• *By Car**: Approximately 25 minutes (16km) east from the Numata I.C. via the Kan-etsu Expressway on Route 120.
• *By Public Transport**: Take the Kan-etsu Kotsu Bus from JR Numata Station for about 45 minutes. Get off at the 'Fukiware-no-taki' stop and walk for about 3 minutes (220m).

Visiting Tips

The area is a scenic natural spot with viewing platforms and walking paths. While the paths are maintained, some sections include slopes and stairs, so comfortable walking shoes are highly recommended. Free parking is available near the falls, but please note that some nearby private parking lots may charge a fee.
