Kasumagijo Park Autumn Illumination

5 min read

Event Overview

Kasumagijo Park (Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins) hosts the annual Autumn Illumination to celebrate the breathtaking beauty of the changing season. As autumn deepens, the historic landscape—centered around a traditional stroll garden maintained by feudal lords since the Edo period—is transformed into a dreamlike space by soft, glowing lights. This is a perfect opportunity to enjoy the majestic scenery of one of Japan's top 100 castles under a magical nighttime sky.

Highlights & Best Ways to Enjoy

The main attraction is the stunning illumination of the Japanese garden zone and the scenic waterways along Minowa-mon Street. The way the vibrant colors of the autumn leaves reflect on the water's surface, combined with the light hitting the ancient stone walls, creates a deeply atmospheric scene quite different from the daytime. We recommend a peaceful evening stroll around Kasumi Pond to soak in the historical ambiance and the serene night air.

Schedule

The illumination is scheduled from Saturday, October 3 to Monday, November 23 (Public Holiday). The lights are turned on from 16:30 to 21:00. Please time your visit to coincide with the peak of the autumn foliage for the best experience.

Venue & Access

The event takes place at Kasumagijo Park (Nihonmatsu Castle Ruins) in Nihonmatsu City, Fukushima Prefecture.

  • *By Train**: Approximately a 20-minute walk from JR Nihonmatsu Station on the Tohoku Main Line.
  • *By Car**: About a 5-minute drive from the Nihonmatsu IC on the Tohoku Expressway. On-site parking is available.

Tips for Visitors

As the illumination takes place at night, some areas may be dimly lit. Since the site features historic stone walls and uneven paths, we highly recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and paying close attention to your footing. Additionally, temperatures drop significantly in the autumn evening, so please prepare for the cold.

Clothing & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please bring warm clothing to stay comfortable.
  • *Footwear**: Comfortable walking shoes are recommended due to the stone walls and unpaved surfaces.
  • *Reservations & Fees**: No advanced reservations or entrance fees are required. Please check the official website for the latest updates.
