Kangetsu no Yube (Moon Viewing Evening)

5 min read

Event Overview

"Kangetsu no Yube" is a special traditional event held at Daikakuji Temple (Ukyo-ku, Kyoto) to celebrate the beauty of the moon and the changing seasons. Set against the backdrop of the magnificent Osawa Pond, you can enjoy the ethereal scenery of the illuminated pond and gardens in the serene atmosphere of this historic temple.

Highlights & Activities

The greatest draw of this event is the breathtaking sight of moonlight reflecting on Ososa Pond. As you stroll around the illuminated pond, you can immerse yourself in the traditional Japanese culture of "Tsukimi" (moon viewing). For a truly special experience, you can enjoy a cruise on the historic Ryuto Ekishu boat or savor premium matcha at the Godo-do viewing area (Note: These experiences require a special pre-booked ticket).

Schedule & Dates

Please check the official website for the latest information regarding event dates. Please note that schedules may change or be canceled due to weather conditions, moon phases, or typhoons. We strongly recommend checking the official website for the most up-to-date status before your visit.

Venue & Access

The event takes place at Daikakuji Temple, located in Ukyo-ku, Kyoto. The festivities are centered around the expansive Osawa Pond area.

Participation Tips

There are two ways to enjoy "Kangetsu no Yube": standard admission and the "Special Ticket" experience. General admission (for strolling and viewing the pond) does not require a reservation. However, if you wish to experience the Ryuto Ekishu boat cruise or the Godo-do viewing area, you must purchase a dedicated Special Ticket in advance. Availability of these tickets varies each year, so early confirmation is essential.

What to Bring, Clothing & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: As this is an outdoor nighttime event, we recommend wearing comfortable walking shoes and bringing appropriate warm clothing for the season.
  • *Food & Drink**: Please refrain from bringing food or drinks into the temple grounds. Eating and drinking within the premises is prohibited.
  • *Reservations**: If you wish to participate in special activities (boat cruises or viewing sessions), you must apply via the official website in advance.
  • *Weather**: The event may be canceled or modified due to typhoons or severe weather. Please check the official website for real-time updates on the day of your visit.
