Event Overview

Kagura Hajime-shiki is a significant Shinto ritual held at Kasuga Taisha in Nara to pray for the successful performance of Kagura throughout the year and for national peace. During this ceremony, eight shrine maidens known as 'Yaotome' perform the 'Shaden Kagura,' a traditional dance passed down through the generations at Kasuga Taisha. As the new year begins, this sacred dance offers a profound and moving experience for all visitors.

Highlights

The main highlight is the solemn performance of Kagura held directly in front of the Omiya (Main Shrine). The ceremony begins with the performance of the secret 'Kami-oroshi' piece. A particularly rare and beautiful sight is the moment the Ichiro (the highest-ranking shrine maiden) holds the Wasa-kaki and performs the 'Chiyo-made' dance. This is a precious opportunity to witness the elegance of Japanese traditional dance and spiritual essence up close.

Access:

  • From JR Nara Station or Kintetsu Nara Station, take a bus bound for 'Kasuga Taisha Honden' and get off at 'Kasuga Taisha Honden.'
  • Use the City Loop Bus (Outer Loop) and get off at 'Kasuga Taisha Omotesando,' followed by an approximately 10-minute walk.

Tips for Visitors

Kagura Hajime-shiki is a sacred ritual. Since it is held right in front of the Main Shrine, we recommend soaking in the tranquil atmosphere of the shrine while observing the traditional forms of Japanese prayer. It is a perfect way to celebrate your New Year's visit (Hatsumode).
