Joya-kai (New Year's Eve Bell Ceremony)

Event Overview

The Joya-kai at Saidai-ji is a traditional Buddhist ritual held to mark the end of the year. Every December 31st, as the night deepens, the temple's great bronze bell (bonsho) is struck to purify the soul of the past year's impurities and pray for peace in the coming year. Saidai-ji is a historic temple founded in 765 AD by order of Empress Shotoku and is renowned as a fundamental center for the Shingon-Ritsu school of Buddhism. Listening to the deep, resonant vibrations of the bell offers a profound sense of spiritual clarity and peace.

The main highlight is the powerful sound of the 'Joya no Kane' (New Year's Eve Bell) echoing through the night. Starting around 23:45, the rhythmic strikes of the bell allow visitors to disconnect from the noise of daily life and engage in deep introspection. Around 23:30, a formal Buddhist service is held to repent for the year's transgressions and pray for a peaceful new year. Surrounded by historic architecture and national treasures, you will feel the essence of Japanese spiritual culture. Important Information for Visitors

As the Joya-kai takes place late at night, it follows a different schedule than the standard visiting hours (8:30–16:30). Because the event is held in a highly sacred and quiet environment, visitors are asked to maintain silence. Additionally, as it is a late-night event in winter, temperatures will be extremely low. Please prepare thoroughly for the cold to fully enjoy the solemn atmosphere.
