Event Overview

Itoman O-tsuna Hiki is a traditional ritual held in Itoman City, southern Okinawa, to pray for bountiful harvests, good fishing, and family safety. Held on the 15th day of the 8th lunar month (Mid-Autumn Moon), it is one of Okinawa's three most significant rope-pulling events. The highlight is the intense battle between two sides pulling a massive rope.

Highlights

Massive Scale Rope Pulling

The centerpiece is a massive rope approximately 150 meters long and 1 meter in diameter, made from 10 tons of rice straw. As the two sides pull with all their might in the late afternoon, the energy and unity of the crowd are truly breathtaking.

Vibrant 'Dozune' Parade

Before the main event, the 'Dozune' parade brings the streets to life. Over 1,000 participants, including performers of Eisa drumming and Ryukyuan dance, march through the streets with grand banners, creating a festive atmosphere.

The Appearance of 'Shitaku'

Just before the pull, performers dressed as legendary heroes or historical figures, known as 'Shitaku,' appear. Their dramatic presence heightens the tension and excitement of the festival.

Schedule

On September 25, 2026 (Friday), the schedule is as follows:

  • *08:30–13:00**: Rope construction (Itoman Rotary to Hakugin-do)
  • *13:30–14:00**: Dozne Departure Ceremony (Itoman Elementary School)
  • *14:00–17:00**: Dozne Parade
  • *17:00–17:15**: Opening Ceremony
  • *17:15–17:45**: Main Rope Pulling Event
  • *17:45–18:00**: Closing Ceremony

Venue & Access

The event takes place between Hakugin-do and Itoman Rotary on Prefectural Road 256.

  • *From Naha Airport**: Approx. 20 minutes by car (heading south on Prefectural Road 256).
  • *Public Transport**: Use the bus (Route 89) from Akamine Station (Yui Rail) or Naha Asahibashi Bus Terminal.
  • *Traffic Restrictions**: Expect road closures on Prefectural Roads 256 and 77 during the event.

Tips for Visitors

Anyone can join the excitement! You are welcome to watch or even participate in the pull. It is a tradition to take home small pieces of the straw used for good luck and protection.

What to Bring & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: Wear comfortable clothes if you plan to join the pull or stand near the action. Bring a light layer for the evening temperature drop.
  • *Parking**: Limited temporary parking is available. Using public transport or shuttles is highly recommended due to expected crowds.
  • *Note**: Please plan your travel in advance due to heavy traffic restrictions.
