Event Overview

The Hyuga Hyottoko Natsu Matsuri is a summer festival centered around the traditional local art of the "Nagata Hyottoko Dance" in Hyuga City, Miyazaki Prefecture. Established in 1984 to promote this local heritage, the festival has grown into one of Miyazaki's most significant large-scale events. The sight of dancers wearing traditional masks and performing whimsical, charming movements brings smiles to spectators and fills the community with energy.

The main highlight is the "Hyottoko Dance Parade" that marches through the central streets of Hyuga. Over 2,000 dancers from across the country gather to perform a unique rhythmic dance, characterized by stepping forward with one foot and extending their hands. The sight of the streets being dyed bright red by the dancers' kimonos is breathtaking. Additionally, the eve of the festival features a spirited competition where dancers compete for different character roles such as "Kitsune," "Okame," and "Hyottoko."

The festival is held annually on the first Saturday of August. The main parade takes place from evening through the night. The eve of the festival also hosts a national competition for dance skills. Venue & Access

The event is held around the area in front of JR Hyuga-shi Station, centered at the Akugare Hiroba (Hyuga-shi Station Front Exchange Plaza).

  • *By Train**: The venue is a short walk from JR Hyuga-shi Station on the Nippo Main Line. Using public transportation is highly recommended to avoid traffic congestion and parking difficulties.
  • *By Car**: It is approximately a 10-minute drive from the Hyuga IC on the Higashi-Kyushu Expressway. However, please expect heavy traffic and road restrictions on the day of the festival.

Tips for Visitors

During the parade, the distance between dancers and the audience is very close, allowing for lively interaction. There is an interactive element where spectators can participate by giving "medals" to dancers they admire, creating a wonderful sense of unity. To fully enjoy the atmosphere, arrive early to explore the food stalls and local product markets.
