Event Overview

Horo Matsuri is a traditional festival held annually on September 14th at Furuoya Hachiman Shrine in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture. Recognized as a precious intangible folk cultural property of Saitama, this festival is also known locally as the 'Horokake Matsuri.' The most striking feature of this event is the 'Horo Shoikko' ritual, where young children lead the way for the portable shrine (mikoshi).

Highlights and What to Expect

The main highlight is the 'Horo Shoikko' procession. Young boys, dressed in magnificent ceremonial attire such as jinbaori (warrior coats) and wearing traditional face makeup, carry 'Horo'—elaborate back baskets decorated with bamboo and paper flowers. As they march, they perform rhythmic steps known as 'Roppo,' leading the way for the shrine. Accompanied by the powerful, rhythmic shouts of 'Yoisho!' from the crowd, the sight is a dynamic and beautiful display of a traditional Japanese rite of passage.
