Hojozu Hachiman-gu Shrine (Imizu City, Toyama Prefecture) hosts this traditional ritual during its annual autumn festival. The event features two distinct and vital traditions: the 'Hikiyama' (decorated floats) and the 'Tsukiyama' (sacred altar rituals). This unique culture, known as the 'Hojozu style,' developed in the port towns along the Toyama Bay coast since the late Edo period. The true charm of this festival lies in how the floats transform throughout the day. On October 1, 13 magnificent Hikoyama floats parade through the old Shinminato district. During the day, they appear as vibrant 'Hanagasa-yama' (flower canopy floats), while at night, they transform into mystical 'Chochin-yama' (lantern floats) that illuminate the streets with countless glowing lanterns. Another must-see is the rare 'Tsukiyama' ritual. On the evening of September 30, a solemn ceremony is held to welcome the deities from the sea to a temporary altar (Tsukiyama) within the shrine grounds, offering a deeply spiritual experience. The sight of these intricately carved and decorated floats moving through the streets is truly powerful.
