Event Overview

Iyama Hofukuji hosts the "Autumn Special Hojo Opening" to coincide with the peak of the autumn foliage season. This rare event offers a glimpse into the temple's private quarters, specifically the Hojo (the abbot's residence), which is normally closed to the public. Visitors can admire ink paintings by the master Sesshu, his related artifacts, and precious historical treasures preserved by the temple. It is a unique opportunity to experience both Zen culture and the breathtaking scenery of autumn.

The main draw is the chance to enter the Hojo, a space usually inaccessible to visitors, to view exquisite art and historical items. The collection includes works related to the famous painter Sesshu, providing a deep connection to Japanese history. Participation Tips

This event is focused on the appreciation of historical architecture and art. Please note that photography inside the Hojo and Zen halls is strictly prohibited. As you will be viewing extremely precious artifacts, a quiet and respectful demeanor is required.

What to Bring & Etiquette

  • *Footwear**: You will be required to remove your shoes to enter the Hojo or Zen halls. We recommend wearing shoes that are easy to slip on and off.
  • *Photography**: Photography and video recording inside the buildings (Hojo and Zen halls) are strictly prohibited. Please keep your cameras and smartphones away.
  • *Payment**: The entrance fee is a donation (Shino) of 500 JPY for temple repairs, or 1,000 JPY if you wish to make a contribution through the Ken-gawara (tile dedication) program.
