Event Overview

The Harada Jinja Shishi Shinji Festival is a traditional ritual held at the historic Harada Jinja Shrine in Toyonaka, Osaka. This festival is designated as an intangible folk cultural property of Toyonaka City and serves as a vital piece of local heritage. With origins tracing back to the era of Emperor Tenmu, the ritual has a long history of using Shishi (lion) heads to pray for the prevention of plagues. Today, it continues to showcase the beauty of Japanese tradition through the powerful Shishi dance and the mesmerizing sight of massive torches illuminating the night sky.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction of this festival is the powerful "Shishi Dance." The performance features various movements such as Takimai (rising dance), Nemai (lying dance), and Hayamai (fast dance). The dance performed on the stage in front of the shrine is particularly striking and commands the attention of all spectators.

During the climax of the festival, known as the "Yoimiya Festival," the shrine grounds are enveloped in the glow of massive, blazing torches. Watching the Shishi head (locally called "O-tensan") dance amidst the darkness and fire creates a mystical atmosphere, allowing you to experience the intense energy and spiritual mystery of a traditional Japanese festival. Set against the backdrop of the historic Honden (main sanctuary), this is a truly unforgettable cultural moment.
