Fiddler Crab & Sea Firefly Observation Event

Event Overview

Experience the rich natural environment of Kamiamakusa, Kumamoto, through our special nature observation event: the "Fiddler Crab & Sea Firefly Observation Event." This event is divided into two parts, allowing you to enjoy two completely different sides of nature. During the day, observe the unique behaviors of the beautiful Fiddler Crab (a type of crab), and at night, witness the ethereal glow of the Sea Firefly (Umihotaru) illuminating the ocean. Hosted by the local Amakusa Visitor Center, the event includes professional commentary by a professor from Kumamoto University, providing a deep, educational experience beyond simple observation.

Venue & Access

Venues vary depending on the program:

• *Sea Firefly Observation**: Hiiai Beach

Both locations are along the coast of the Amakusa area. As public transportation is limited, we recommend checking your access route in advance.

Participation Tips

This is a perfect opportunity to learn about the wonders of nature. With expert-led lectures, it is highly recommended for anyone interested in natural sciences, including children and adults. However, as activities take place in a natural environment, please note the following:

For the Fiddler Crab observation, you will be active on a sandy beach, so clothes and shoes that can get wet are essential. For the Sea Firefly observation, it is a nighttime activity, so the ground will be dark. Bringing a flashlight is important for safety. Please respect nature and follow all rules to ensure you do not harm the organisms being observed.
