HAKODATE ART EXHIBITION 2026 Vol.3 “Kyū-shigai” is a mobile art event set in the Hakodate Seibu district (Old Town), an area known for its nostalgic streets and Western-influenced architecture. The event is produced by TERU, the vocalist of the famous Japanese rock band GLAY.
The venue area is characterized by beautiful, historic-style buildings. This exhibition is designed to help visitors rediscover the charm of the city through various mediums: large-scale installations, photography by Hakodate-born artists, and the fusion of poetry and calligraphy set within Important Cultural Properties. Visitors can explore different perspectives of art and history by moving between various venues via local transport like the streetcar.
The main draw of this event is the diversity of artistic expressions across three distinct venues:
1. Odajima Suisan Shokuhin: Experience an installation produced by TERU. This venue features a Hakodate version of the acclaimed "Character Exhibition" from Shibuya, Tokyo, and works themed around "Lines," allowing you to experience the space itself as a work of art.
2. TSU@THE TABLE GALLERY: Enjoy a photography exhibition by photographers from Hakodate. Featured artists include Yusuke Oishi, Yusuke Baba, Takayuki Koike, and Kosutaro (all closely related to TERU), as well as JIRO, the bassist of GLAY. On the second floor, you can also enjoy a warm, tactile exhibition featuring works by local calligraphers and children.
3. Tachikawa-ya Residence & Shop: Experience a sensory journey set against an Important Cultural Property. This venue features calligraphy by Akiko Sasaki, inspired by poems written by GLAY's main composer, TAKURO. Additionally, enjoy a limited-edition matcha cafe in collaboration with the popular "HAKODATE MATCHA STAND" and live DJ sets by artist Azumi, blending music, food, and history.
