Event Overview

Hakata Toumyou Watching is a special one-night-only autumn event held in the Hakata Old Town area of Fukuoka City. Tens of thousands of handmade lanterns, crafted by local residents, gently illuminate the temples, historic sites, and charming alleys of the district. Inspired by the traditional 'Sen-toumei' festival, this event aims to rediscover the charm of Hak-ata and strengthen community bonds. 2026 marks the significant 30th anniversary of this beautiful tradition.

Highlights & What to Enjoy

The greatest charm is the breathtaking sight of tens of thousands of lanterns floating in the darkness, creating a warm and mystical atmosphere. A standout feature is the 'Toumyou Chijou-e' (Lantern Floor Art), where lanterns are arranged to create large, stunning patterns on the ground. Walking through the temple approaches and the narrow, historic streets of Hakata feels like stepping back in time. Depending on the area you visit, you can enjoy the contrast between the serene temple landscapes and the vibrant energy of the modern city.

The event will be held on Saturday, October 17, 2026. The illumination runs from 18:00 to 21:00. The event proceeds in light rain, but please note that outdoor displays like the floor art may be modified or canceled due to severe weather (such as heavy rain or strong winds). We recommend checking the latest updates before your visit.

Venue & Access

The venue covers a wide area within Hakata-ku, Fukuoka City. Key areas include the vicinity of JR Hakata Station, Hakata Sennenmon, Gofusho, Reisen, Kushida Shrine, Hakata Riverain, Naraya, and Ohama. Because the venue is very large, the best way to enjoy it is by walking through different sections.

  • *From Hakata Station/Gion Area**: Walk from JR Hakata Station or use the Subway Airport Line to reach 'Gion Station.' A popular route is walking from Hakata Station toward the temple district.
  • *From Nakasu/Kushida Shrine Area**: 'Kushida Shrine-mae Station' (Nanakuma Line) and 'Nakasu-Kawabata Station' (Airport Line) are very convenient. You can enjoy a stroll through the nearby shopping streets.
  • *From Gofukumachi/Naraya Area**: Please use 'Gofukumachi Station' or nearby bus stops.
