Guide
Gyoten Zazen is a special annual meditation event held at Hofukuji Temple in Okayama Prefecture. "Gyoten" refers to the "dawn," and as the name suggests, this session is practiced in the profound silence before daybreak. Unlike regular meditation sessions, this is a rare opportunity to deeply connect with yourself amidst the crisp, clear air of the early morning.
This event is cherished by those seeking to escape the bustle of daily life and sharpen their spirit. Within the solemn atmosphere of the historic Hofukuji, you can truly feel the essence of Zen.
The greatest appeal is the timing: the break of dawn. Starting at 5:00 AM, the meditation is practiced while the surroundings are still dark and silent. Watching the sky gradually brighten as you experience the process of calming your mind is a unique pleasure of Gyoten Zazen.
The session consists of two 30-minute meditation periods, allowing you to build focus through a manageable rhythm. Beyond the practice itself, the historic temple architecture and the very atmosphere of the space provide deep relaxation and mindfulness, helping you find inner peace and relief from daily stress.
Gyoten Zazen is held annually for five days from August 1st to August 5th.
As this is an early morning event, please arrive with plenty of time to ensure you do not miss the start of the session.
The event takes place at Hofukuji.
