Fuyumoi at Kawagoe Kumano Jinja is a special ritual to purify the mind and body at the end of the year. This historic shrine, established in 1590 after being branched from Kishu Kumano, is deeply revered for bringing good fortune, matchmaking, and protection against misfortune. Amidst the crisp winter air, you can participate in traditional purification ceremonies to wash away the year's impurities and prepare for the New Year.
The main highlights of Fuyumoi are the spiritual purification rituals: 'Chinowa-kuguri' (passing through a sacred straw ring) and 'Ningyo Kiyome-harai' (purification of dolls). These traditional practices are designed to cleanse unseen impurities and offer a profound sense of renewal. Additionally, the limited-edition 'Special Goshuin' stamps are a major draw. These exquisitely designed stamps reflect the seasonal beauty and serve as a wonderful memento of your visit. You can also enjoy a peaceful stroll through the shrine grounds, featuring traditional elements like the Zen-arai (money washing) pond and stone paths.
The Fuyumoi period runs from December 5 to December 30. Please note that the window for applying for the special Goshuin sets via mail is limited from December 6 to December 20. Spend a tranquil moment marking the turning of the year in this serene atmosphere.
The event takes place at Kawagoe Kumano Jinja, located in Kawagoe, Saitama Prefecture. The shrine grounds offer a beautiful, historic atmosphere that changes with the seasons. Please note that the shrine does not have a dedicated parking lot, so we highly recommend using public transportation to reach the venue.
To fully enjoy Fuyumoi, be sure to check the seasonal Goshuin offerings. For example, there may be special sets featuring motifs like the Yatagarasu (three-legged crow) or Amabie. Since prices and contents vary by set, checking the official website in advance is recommended. Also, please be aware that there are specific times for receiving hand-written Goshuin stamps; visiting during regular business hours is advised to ensure availability.
