Event Overview

The Hitaki-sai (Fire Festival) is a significant traditional ritual held annually on November 8 at Fushimi Inari Taisha. Also known as the "Fuigo Matsuri," this sacred fire ceremony is held to express gratitude to the deity Inari Okami for a bountiful harvest and to guide the gods up the mountain after the autumn harvest.

Highlights & What to Expect

The most spectacular sight is the burning of hundreds of thousands of "Hitaki-gushi" (ritual sticks) on three ceremonial altars at the Shin-en Saijo. These sticks, which carry the prayers of devotees from across the country, are burned alongside rice straw to complete the sacred agricultural ritual.

As evening falls, the atmosphere becomes even more enchanting with the sounds of Gagaku (traditional court music). You can witness the performance of Kagura dances, including the historic Mikagura and Hitonagema, accompanied by the elegant melodies of the flute, koto, and hichiriki.
