Event Overview

Fujimori Jinja Kaba Shinji is a traditional ritual boasting a 1,200-year history. Its origins are said to trace back to 781, inspired by the movements of Prince Sawara during his departure for a military campaign. During the Muromachi period, it was a stage for high-level martial displays by military officials, and during the Edo period, it was refined by samurai and equestrian masters. Today, it is carefully preserved by Fujimori Jinja and its preservation society as a registered Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Kyoto. While once held on public roads, the performance is now held at the Sando-ba within the Fujimori Jinja shrine grounds.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The greatest appeal of this ritual is the highly advanced and acrobatic 'waza' (techniques) that go far beyond simple horse riding. Spectators can witness breathtaking performances up close, such as 'Sakudachi' (a handstand performed on horseback while maintaining perfect balance), 'Tazuna-kuguri' (riding through the reins amidst a flurry of arrows), and 'Gyakunori (Jizo)' (riding backward to monitor enemy movements). Each technique carries strategic significance from ancient battlefields, allowing you to feel the essence of Japanese history and the samurai spirit.

The venue is the Sando-ba (approach path) within the Fujimori Jinja shrine grounds.

Access:

Approximately a 10-minute walk from Sumizome Station on the Keihan Electric Railway. We highly recommend using public transportation (trains or buses).

• *Parking**: There is no parking available. Please use public transportation.
