Event Overview

Fujinomiya Matsuri is the grand autumn festival of Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha, a shrine that has long served as the starting point for climbing Mount Fuji. Rooted in the rich history of Fujinomiya, local neighborhoods parade decorated floats and food stalls to celebrate the harvest and give thanks for a safe year. The festival's soul, the "Fujinomiya Hayashi" music, is designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Shizuoka Prefecture and is a source of great local pride.

Schedule

The festival takes place over three days. On the first day, a ceremonial procession is held at Fujisan Hongu Sengen Taisha. On the second day, a major gathering of floats and stalls occurs around the shrine area. Following this, the spirited float competitions and dances unfold across the main streets of the city.

By Public Transportation

  • *Train**: The nearest stations are Fujinomiya Station or Nishi-Fujinomiya Station on the JR Minobu Line. For travelers from Tokyo, take the JR Tokaido Line to Mishima Station, then transfer to the JR Minobu Line via Fuji Station. For those from Osaka or Nagoya, take the JR Tokaido Line to Shizuoka Station, then transfer to the JR Minobu Line via Fuji Station.
  • *Direct Bus**: The "Yakisoba Express" runs directly from Tokyo Station to Fujinomiya Station and the Fuji Kyuko Fujinomiya Depot. From the Osaka/Kyoto area, the Fuji Kyuko Yamanashi Bus (night bus) stops at Fuji and Fujinomiya Stations.

By Car

  • On the second day of the festival, significant traffic restrictions are in place due to the main events. Driving into the city center is not possible; the use of public transportation is strongly recommended.
