The Zuiki Matsuri is a traditional ritual held at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine in Kyoto. The festival's most striking feature is its namesake: the 'Zuiki' (dried taro stalks). The roofs and pillars of the portable shrines (mikoshi) are constructed using these dried stalks, creating a unique, organic appearance that is a rare sight in Japanese festivals. It is a beautiful way to welcome the arrival of autumn in Kyoto.
The main highlight is the procession of the mikoshi. There are two shrines in total, both featuring roofs made entirely from dried taro stalks. Seeing these shrines, decorated with dried vegetables and natural materials, parading through the streets is a truly rare spectacle. Additionally, as the procession passes through the historic Kamishichiken district, you may catch a glimpse of Geiko and Maiko watching the event, adding a touch of classical Kyoto elegance to the experience.
