The Yunishigawa Onsen Kamakura Festival is a signature winter event held in the Yunishigawa Onsen area of Nikko, Tochigi Prefecture. From late January to early March, the town transforms as countless 'kamakura' (miniature snow huts) are placed throughout the area. Formerly known as the 'Glowing Ice Lantern Festival,' this event attracts visitors with its stunning displays of light and snow. These handcrafted mini-kamakura emit a warm, inviting glow, creating a dreamlike atmosphere in the heart of the snowy mountains.
The absolute highlight is the nighttime illumination. The sight of countless mini-kamakura glowing along the Sawaguchi Riverbank is truly magical, looking like floating embers of light against the white snow—a perfect moment for photography and social media. For a more tranquil experience, visit the 'Heike no Sato' area, where traditional architecture meets the soft glow of snow lanterns. You can also enjoy food and drinks inside the kamakura or explore snow play areas, making it a wonderful experience for families and couples alike.
The festival typically runs from late January to early March. On Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays, the illumination at the Sawaguchi Riverbank venue begins around 17:30. Regarding access, during weekends (Fri–Sun), Nikko Kotsu may operate a special one-way extra bus service between Kinugawa Onsen Station and Yunishigawa Onsen. This makes it possible to plan a day trip from Tokyo via train and bus.
Since each area offers a different vibe, we recommend exploring multiple spots. The illumination is most striking after sunset, so plan your stroll for the evening. While the riverbank area is well-maintained, the ground can be very slippery due to snow and ice, so please walk carefully.
As this event takes place in an extremely cold environment, we strongly recommend wearing heavy winter clothing and thermal gear. Please wear sturdy, non-slip shoes for walking on snow.
