Yoshiwara Gion Matsuri is one of the most significant traditional festivals in the Tokai region, organized by the 25 neighborhoods of Yoshiwara and six local shrines in Fuji City, Shizuoka. Its origins date back to the Heian period as a sacred ritual to ward off evil spirits and plagues, deeply rooted in the community's history. It is a vibrant celebration of local unity and spirit.
The true thrill of this festival lies in the dynamic movement of the 'Dashi' (ornate floats) and 'Mikoshi' (portable shrines). On Saturday and Sunday, 21 magnificent floats parade through the streets. The most enchanting moment occurs at dusk, when the floats are illuminated by glowing lanterns, creating a mystical atmosphere that reaches a fever pitch alongside the rhythmic sounds of traditional festival music.
On Sundays, you can witness the energy of the local youth and children carrying the Mikoshi through the streets. You may even see traditional rituals, such as the splashing of seawater, which offers a profound glimpse into the authentic essence of Japanese festival culture.
The festival is held on June 20, 2027 (typically held on the second Saturday and Sunday of June).

The energy builds up throughout the afternoon. The evening float parade is particularly beautiful for photography due to the lantern light. Please be aware that the area becomes very crowded, so move carefully and stay aware of your surroundings.
