Event Overview

The Yosakoi Festival is one of Japan's most energetic dance celebrations, held annually in Kochi City. Since its inception in 1954, it has become one of the three major festivals in Shikoku, rivaling the famous Awa Odori in intensity. The festival is defined by the rhythmic sound of Naruko (wooden clappers) and a fusion of traditional Japanese dance with modern genres like rock, hip-hop, flamenco, and samba. As approximately 200 teams and 20,000 dancers parade through the streets, they follow decorated trucks called "Jikatasha," creating a breathtaking spectacle that pulls every spectator into a whirlwind of excitement.

The greatest draw is the seamless fusion of music and dance. You will witness highly creative performances that preserve traditional Japanese elements while embracing global musical styles. The sight of dancers in vibrant costumes, the powerful clacking of Naruko, and the massive Jikatasha trucks moving to the beat is truly awe-inspiring. A unique highlight is the opportunity for spectators to become part of the show. Through programs like the "Citizen Charter Corps," even visitors can join the dance, turning the boundary between performer and audience into one unified, joyful experience.

Schedule

The festival takes place over four days every year from August 9th to August 12th. The schedule is as follows:

• *August 9**: Eve of the Festival (Includes the Kochi City Summer Fireworks Display with approximately 4,000 fireworks).
• *August 10 & 11**: Main Festival (Approximately 200 teams perform at various Kyoeijo and Enba-jo venues throughout the city).
• *August 12**: National Championship & After-party (A large-scale stage featuring teams from across Japan).

Venue & Access

The festival is spread across multiple locations throughout Kochi City. The main areas include:

• *Kyoeijo**: The primary performance stages (9 locations within the city).
• *Enba-jo**: Smaller performance areas set up throughout the streets (8 locations within the city).

As the festivities are centered in the heart of Kochi, you can enjoy a variety of performances by moving between venues. Since crowds are expected to be very large, using public transportation is highly recommended.

Participation Tips

If you want to do more than just watch, look for the "Citizen Charter Corps" information. On August 10th and 11th around 2:00 PM, you can head to the Otemae High School gymnasium to join the dance for free. Naruko clappers are also available for free loan, making it easy to jump in without any preparation. Some teams may also offer original Happi coats or Naruko for purchase if you wish to own a piece of the festival.

What to Bring & Etiquette

Comfortable clothing is recommended for spectating. As this is an outdoor summer event, please prepare for the heat by bringing water and a hat to prevent heatstroke. If you plan to join the dance, free Naruko are available, but you are welcome to bring your own.
