The Yokosu Matsuri is a spectacular event in Komatsushima City, Tokushima Prefecture, where traditional Japanese festivities and high-impact fireworks displays merge. The fireworks are launched from within the Komatsushima Keirinjo (velodrome), creating a magical experience where massive shells bloom directly overhead. Alongside the fireworks, you can witness the energetic procession of Mikoshi (portable shrines) and Yatai (festival floats), capturing the true spirit of local Japanese culture.
The main attraction is the display of approximately 1,500 fireworks launched from the Keirin track. The massive shells (Shakudama) and colorful star mines are particularly breathtaking when they explode directly above the spectators. Watching from the Keirinjo spectator seats provides an immersive, close-up feeling of the light and sound. For those looking to capture the perfect photograph, Shiokaze Park on the opposite bank offers an excellent vantage point for a wide-angle view of the display.
On the cultural side, the procession of traditional Mikoshi and Yatai is a must-see. On the 7th, the procession begins at Hiruko Shrine at 9:30 AM, winding through the town. A highlight occurs after noon, when the Mikoshi enters Yokosu-no-hama to perform the traditional ritual of entering the sea.
