The Etchu Yatsuo Hikiyama Festival is a historic spring celebration held annually on May 3 in the Yatsuo district of Toyama City. This festival showcases the town's rich merchant culture, once famous for silk and Yatsuo paper. Six magnificent floats (hikiyama), decorated with exquisite carvings and gold leaf, parade through the scenic sloping streets accompanied by traditional music. This event is a designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Toyama Prefecture.
The main draw is the sheer opulence of the floats. Each one features intricate carvings, lacquerware, and gold leaf by master craftsmen. As night falls, the floats transform into 'Chochin-yama' (lantern floats), with approximately 400 lanterns attached to each. The sight of thousands of lights illuminating the dark, sloping streets creates a magical, dreamlike atmosphere.
