The Yamagata Hanagasa Matsuri is one of the most iconic summer festivals in the Tohoku region. Dancers parade through the streets holding "Hanagasa"—traditional hats adorned with bright red floral decorations—while performing the rhythmic "Hanagasa Ondo" dance. Since its start in 1963, this parade has become a celebrated symbol of Yamagata's culture, filling the city with music and color.
The main attraction is the grand parade where dancers move in unison to traditional rhythms. You can witness various styles, from the graceful, elegant movements of women to the powerful, energetic motions of men in the "Seicho Hanagasa Odori" style. The atmosphere is electric, filled with the spirited shouts of "Yassho, Makasho!" that drive the energy of the crowd.
The festival takes place annually over three days: August 5, August 6, and August 7.
The parade route runs through the heart of Yamagata City, starting from the front of Bunshokan and moving through the central shopping districts, including Hokomachi, Honmachi, and Nanikamachi streets.
As this is a large-scale event with many participants, the streets will be very crowded and lively. It is a perfect opportunity to see various regional dance styles and traditional choreography up close.
Expect high temperatures and humidity during the event. We recommend bringing plenty of water and wearing a hat to stay cool and prevent heat exhaustion.
