Event Overview

The Yamaga Toro Matsuri is a prestigious historical festival centered around Omiya Shrine in Yamaga City, Kumamoto Prefecture. Its origins trace back to a legend where locals guided Emperor Keiko through a thick fog using torches, a story that has become a symbol of the region's hospitality. The festival is also deeply connected to the history of praying for bountiful hot spring springs during the Muromachi period.

Today, the festival is famous for the 'Kana-toro' (Golden Lanterns)—exquisite lanterns made of gold and silver washi paper. As dancers perform the graceful 'Yoho-boshi' folk dance, the sight of a thousand lights creates a mesmerizing spectacle that attracts visitors from around the world. Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute climax of the festival is the 'Thousand-Person Lantern Dance' held on the night of August 16. Seeing a thousand women in traditional yukata dancing with golden lanterns held high creates a swirling vortex of light against the dark sky. The slow, rhythmic 'Yoho-boshi' music adds a sense of elegance to this artistic display of light and shadow.

On August 15, you can enjoy the 'Hono-toro Dance' at the Omiya Shrine grounds, followed by a spectacular fireworks display over the Kikuchi River. On the night of August 16, the energy reaches its peak with a ceremonial procession to welcome Emperor Keiko, accompanied by a dramatic torchlight parade (Matsubi Gyoretsu).

Areas like the Yamaga Elementary School ground become very crowded during the Thousand-Person Lantern Dance. To secure a good view of the thousand dancers, it is essential to arrive early. As these are nighttime events, please prepare for the evening air and ensure you can move safely in the dark.
