The Usa Hachiman-gu Koshiwari is a significant sacred ritual held at Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine in Hofu City, Yamaguchi Prefecture, as part of the autumn festivities. The tradition is said to originate from the Sengoku period, when the warlord Ouchi Yoshioki offered a dance to pray for victory in battle. This ritual serves as a precious cultural heritage that preserves the history and spirit of the region.
The true highlight of this festival is the energetic and rhythmic dance performed by local children. Twelve dancers wear striking traditional headgear, such as Hanagasa (flower hats) and Torikannmuri (bird-style crowns), and are adorned with vibrant, colorful fabrics around their waists. The sight of these bright costumes moving in unison is breathtaking and offers a profound look into the aesthetic beauty of traditional Japanese culture.
The festival is held on the Sunday closest to August 16th of the lunar calendar. While the general program runs from 8:30 AM to approximately 3:00 PM, the main event, the "Koshiwari Odori" (Koshiwari Dance), is scheduled to begin around 11:00 AM. To ensure you don't miss the most spectacular part of the ritual, we recommend arriving at the shrine well in advance.
The event takes place at Usa Hachiman-gu Shrine (Address: 840 Oaza Suzuya, Hofu, Yamaguchi Prefecture). If traveling by car, it is a smooth 10-minute drive from the Hofu-nishi IC on the Sanyo Expressway. If using public transportation, please check local bus routes and station transfers in advance to ensure a smooth journey.
To see the main event, the Koshiwari Odori, aim to be at the venue by 11:00 AM. Arriving around this time is the most efficient way to enjoy the highlight of the festival. As this is a sacred ritual (Shinji), please observe the ceremony with respect and maintain a quiet, respectful atmosphere.
