Event Overview

The Tsuchizaki Shinmei-sha Festival is a historic celebration dating back to the 18th century, held in the Tsuchizaki Port area of Akita City. Designated as a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property, this event is a beloved cornerstone of local identity. The sight of the massive, elaborately decorated 'Hikiyama' floats, carrying brave warrior dolls and accompanied by traditional music, is a signature spectacle that marks the beginning of the short, vibrant summer in northern Japan.

The true thrill of this festival lies in the sheer power of the Hikiyama floats and the rhythmic sounds of the traditional music. Watching the decorated floats perform traditional dances in the streets is a must-see. The climax occurs during the 'Modori-yamaki' (Return Procession) at night, where the glow of lanterns creates a breathtaking, mystical atmosphere against the dark sky. The high-energy shouts of the participants and the rhythmic 'Minato-bayashi' music will leave you completely mesmerized.

Schedule

The festival takes place over two days on July 20 and 21 every year.

  • *July 20 (Yoimiya/Eve)**

The festivities begin with a procession through the local neighborhoods to purify the area, followed by the 'Go-sha Mairi' where the floats visit the Tsuchizaki Shinmei-sha Shrine. The atmosphere becomes lively around Honcho Street in the evening.

  • *July 21 (Main Festival)**

In the morning, all floats gather at the Otabasho. Around 12:30 PM, signaled by a smoke flare, the 'Miyuki-yamaki' procession begins, starting with the Aizome-cho float and moving north along Honcho Street.

At 8:00 PM, signaled by another flare, the 'Modori-yamaki' (Return Procession) begins. The floats head back in reverse order, marking the grand climax of the festival.

The event is held around the Tsuchizaki Shinmei-sha Shrine and the Tsuchizaki Port area (including Honcho Street) in Akita City.

  • *By Train**: Approximately 8 minutes from JR Akita Station (get off at Tsuchizaki Station).
  • *By Car**: Approximately 8 minutes from the Akita Kita IC on the Akita Expressway.
  • *By Ferry**: Approximately 5 minutes by car from Akita Port.
  • *By Air**: Approximately 30 minutes by car from Akita Airport.

Tips for Visitors

Traffic restrictions will be in place throughout the Tsuchizaki area during the festival. Please stay in designated viewing areas, as the floats can move with significant speed and force. Occasionally, there are events like the 'Fureai Hikiyama' where visitors may have the chance to experience pulling the floats.

What to Bring & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: As this is held during the hot summer, we recommend light, breathable clothing. Comfortable walking shoes are essential for navigating the crowds.
  • *Safety**: The floats may pass very close to spectators. During the 'Modori-yamaki' procession, the movement becomes much more intense, so please maintain a safe distance.
