The Turchiura National Fireworks Competition is one of Japan's most prestigious competitive fireworks events, held in Tsuchiura City, Ibaraki Prefecture. Unlike standard fireworks festivals, this is a high-stakes competition where top-tier pyrotechnicians from across the country showcase their advanced technical skills before a panel of judges and an audience. Because every artisan strives to demonstrate maximum precision within a limited time, the display is incredibly dense, artistic, and high-impact.
The main draw is the competitive nature of the show. The event features specific categories such as the "Starmine Section," "10-号 Tama Section," and the "Creative Fireworks Section," each highlighting different technical mastery and aesthetic beauty. Beyond the competition, the program includes engaging segments like "Lecture Fireworks" to educate the audience, special appearances by the firework masters themselves, and the spectacular wide-scale starmine display known as "Tsuchiura Hanabi Tsukushi." The event is scheduled for November 7, 2026 (Saturday). The competition begins at 5:30 PM and is expected to conclude by 8:00 PM. Please note that in the event of severe weather, the competition will be postponed to the following week, November 14, 2026 (Saturday).
The venue is the banks of the Sakuragawa River (near Gakuen-ohashi Bridge). Expect extreme crowds on the day of the event; we highly recommend using public transportation and checking your travel route in advance. Please be aware that the flight of helicopters and drones (unmanned aerial vehicles) is strictly prohibited in the vicinity of the venue.
Because this is a professional competition, the displays are characterized by rapid-fire, high-precision starmines. Some specialized displays may only be visible from specific vantage points, so it is helpful to check your position relative to the river. The atmosphere is also enhanced by the presence of various food trucks (kitchen cars) around the area, adding a lively festival vibe to your experience.
As the event takes place in November, be prepared for a significant drop in temperature once the sun sets. It is essential to bring heavy jackets, warm clothing, or blankets to stay comfortable during the long viewing sessions. Please follow all safety rules and be mindful of the crowds.
