The Kaminohara Hachiman-gu Toriou Matsuri is a traditional Shinto ritual held at Kaminohara Hachiman-gu in Imari, Saga Prefecture, on the first Day of the Rabbit in December. The origins of this festival date back to the Nanboku-cho period. It is said to have begun as a form of "fire training" performed by the warrior Kikuchi Takashige, a general of the Southern Court, to rebuild his strength after a defeat. This dynamic event preserves the spirit of martial prowess and local history.
The most thrilling highlight is the intense "battle" that unfolds amidst a storm of flying sparks. The center of the festival is the "Goku-san," which are hand-pressed rice balls made from steamed glutinous rice. Local shrine followers engage in a fierce struggle to claim these sacred rice balls. Watching the attackers fight to seize the Goku-san amidst the dancing light of torches is a breathtaking spectacle. It is a perfect way to experience the true essence of a traditional Japanese fire festival.
