Tonami Yotaka Matsuri is a traditional festival passed down through generations in the former Demachi district of Tonami City, Toyama Prefecture. Dating back to the Taisho era, this ritual is held to pray for a bountiful harvest and successful crops. The night sky is brilliantly illuminated by massive 'Yotaka Andon'—giant lanterns made of bamboo and traditional Japanese paper, standing approximately 6 meters tall.
The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Tsuki-awase'—a high-energy, dramatic ritual. This tradition stems from a 'fighting festival' (kenka matsuri) style, where the narrow streets once led to intense competition between lantern-bearing groups. Watching two massive lanterns collide and push against one another with immense force is a truly overwhelming spectacle. The rhythmic, powerful shouts of the leaders (wakagashira) and the high-energy microphone performances also create an incredible sense of unity and excitement among the crowd.
On the first night, you can also enjoy the 'Andon Contest,' where the craftsmanship and beauty of the various lanterns are showcased in a friendly competition.
