Located at Iida Hachiman Jinja in Ogano Town, Saitama, the Teppo Matsuri is a powerful festival that marks the end of the season in the Chichibu region. Held annually on the second Sunday of December and the day before, this ritual is famous for the thunderous sounds of matchlock guns used to pray for bountiful harvests and good health. As a designated Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Saitama Prefecture, this event offers a rare glimpse into the deep-rooted history and traditions of the local community.
The absolute highlight of the festival is the "Otachi" (Gunfire Offering). Amidst the deaf-inducing cracks of matchlock guns and thick clouds of smoke, two sacred horses gallop up the stone steps toward the shrine. This dynamic and high-energy spectacle is truly awe-inspiring for any observer.
Beyond the main ritual, visitors can enjoy the procession of the "Iida Yatai" floats and the "Hachiman Jinja Kasako" floats. The Iida Yatai features a raised stage where the "Ogano Kabuki"—a traditional theatrical performance designated as a prefectural cultural property—is performed. Watching the performers in traditional costumes alongside the elaborately decorated floats provides a profound sense of Japanese aesthetic beauty.
