Guide
The Takasago Mantosai is a spectacular annual event where the entire city of Takasago, Hyogo Prefecture, is transformed into a living work of art. Under the theme of "A city where stars descend once a year," the local alleys are lined with glowing candles, and buildings are bathed in soft, ethereal light. Located around the south side of Sanyo Takasago Station, this event is a deeply atmospheric experience that blends traditional light displays with modern music and local culture.
The most breathtaking sight is the way the entire cityscape looks like a "carpet of light." Walking through the narrow alleys lined with warm candlelight feels like wandering through a starlit sky. The festival also features a beautiful collaboration with music; various "Jazz Galleries" are set up throughout the area, allowing you to enjoy smooth jazz melodies that harmonize perfectly with the glowing scenery. With illuminated buildings, art exhibitions, and local markets (Rakuichi) happening simultaneously, you can fully immerse yourself in the beauty of a Japanese night through both sight and sound.
Please note that the schedule may change depending on weather conditions. We recommend checking for the latest updates before your visit.
The event takes place in the area south of Sanyo Takasago Station. The venue spans the entire neighborhood, with various light installations (4 locations) and Jazz Galleries (4 locations) scattered throughout. The best way to experience it is to walk around the area near the station to visit each spot at your own pace.
Since the event covers a wide area, it is helpful to have a rough idea of your walking route in advance. While the candlelight is perfect for photography, please be careful of your footing when walking through darker alleys. Because multiple events like jazz performances and exhibitions happen at the same time, we recommend a relaxed pace to discover your favorite musical or visual displays.
As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please dress warmly. To fully enjoy the cozy atmosphere of the candlelight, bringing a warm coat or a shawl is highly recommended. Please check the official website for specific details regarding payments or any necessary reservations for specific venues.
