The Takaoka Goshamayama Festival is a premier spring ritual held annually on May 1st at Takaoka Sekino Shrine in Takaoka, Toyama. As one of the oldest and most prestigious float (dashi) festivals in the region, it features seven exquisitely decorated floats known as Goshamayama. These floats parade through the historic old town accompanied by traditional music. The festival is recognized as both a National Important Intangible Folk Cultural Property and a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, making it a significant cultural event of immense value.
The main attraction is the sight of the 'Goshamayama' floats, which embody the opulence of the Azuchi-Momoyama period. These 'moving cultural assets' feature intricate metalwork by master craftsmen from the Edo period, exquisite lacquerware, and stunning carvings. Watching these colorful, ornate floats glide through the traditional kura-zukuri (storehouse-style) streets of Takaoka is a truly spectacular sight.
For a more mystical experience, visit during the 'Yoimatsuri' (Eve Festival) on April 30th. The floats are beautifully illuminated, casting a magical glow over the night streets—the perfect time to appreciate the fine details of the craftsmanship.
