The Spring Grand Festival (Shunki Reitaisai) is one of the most prestigious and significant annual celebrations held at Yasukuni Jinja. This highly formal ritual marks the arrival of spring through a series of sacred Shinto ceremonies. Throughout the festival period, various rituals such as the Kiyoharai (purification ceremony), Tojitsusai, and Dainitsusai are performed by Shinto priests. A particularly solemn moment occurs during the Tojitsusai, where a special messenger from the Emperor arrives to present offerings, creating a profound atmosphere of prayer for peace and stability.
The true charm of the Spring Grand Festival lies in the diverse "Celebratory Events" that take place alongside the sacred rituals.
First, visitors can witness the "Dedication Sumo" (Hono Sumo) at the shrine's sumo ring. This is a rare opportunity to see professional-level sumo wrestlers, including those ranked below Yokozuna, demonstrating their immense power and skill up close. Additionally, the Noh Stage within the shrine grounds hosts a variety of "Dedication Performing Arts," including Japanese classical dance, traditional martial arts, poetic chanting (Shigin), and traditional music, offering a deep dive into the essence of Japanese artistry.
Furthermore, the Special Flower Arrangement Exhibition (Tokubetsu Kenka-ten) at the Haiden-mae area showcases the elegance of Japanese aesthetics. With approximately 30 stunning floral displays created by masters of various schools, the exhibition blends the vitality of nature with refined artistic sensibility. For those wishing to participate in the "Formal Worship" (Seishiki Sanpai) at the Main Shrine, you must apply at the Sanjun-den during the designated reception hours. The reception times for Formal Worship are as follows:
For general visitors, standard worship at the Haiden (Offering Hall) is permitted freely during regular shrine hours, from opening (06:00) to closing (20:00) throughout the festival period.
