The Shonai Kagura Festival is a vibrant community celebration held annually on November 3rd (Culture Day) in Shonai-cho, Yufu City, Oita Prefecture. The highlight is the Shonai Kagura, a prestigious traditional performing art designated as an Intangible Folk Cultural Property of Yufu City and recognized as an "Oita Heritage." This event, also known as the Shonai-cho Furusato Festival, combines the spiritual intensity of traditional dance with the joy of a local food festival, offering a complete immersion into Japanese regional culture.
The main attraction is the mesmerizing Kagura dance performed by local troupes. Dressed in elaborate traditional costumes, performers move to the rhythmic sounds of drums, flutes, and cymbals, creating a powerful and spiritual atmosphere. The repertoire includes about 20 different dances, such as the famous "Oja Taiji" (The Great Serpent Battle). It is a unique experience to see everyone from local schoolchildren to elders participating in the dance. Beyond the performances, you can enjoy various local specialties and seasonal flavors at the food stalls.

Kagura performances are held at an outdoor Kagura-den (a traditional stage structure). Since the festival runs from morning until evening, we recommend arriving early to catch your favorite dance pieces. The Furusato Festival part of the event features many food stalls, so come with an appetite to enjoy the local delicacies!
