Event Overview

Shiokake Matsuri is a traditional festival with over 800 years of history, held around Wagu Fishing Port in Shima, Mie Prefecture. The festival celebrates the annual visit of the sea goddess, Ichikishimahime-no-mikoto, who returns from Oshima island to Yakumo Shrine. This ritual prays for maritime safety and abundant catches. From the morning Shinto rituals to the high-energy seawater battles during the day and the spectacular fireworks at night, this is one of Japan's most energetic summer festivals where you can feel the deep connection between the sea and local history.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the "Shiokake Kassen" (Seawater Battle). Once the morning rituals conclude and all boats return to Wagu Fishing Port, participants use buckets and hoses to splash seawater wildly at one another. Be prepared: spectators often get soaked too! Local legend says being splashed by this seawater prevents catching a cold, making it a high-spirited, communal experience.

As the sun sets, the festival concludes with a spectacular fireworks display of approximately 600 shells illuminating the sea and night sky. You can also enjoy the "Shiokake Natsu Matsuri" eve-festival, which features the "Kemokaburi" ritual—a traditional ceremony to pray for good health and protection from illness.

Schedule

The festivities run from the eve-festival through the main event. In 2027, the main event is scheduled for June 1st.

  • *Eve Festival (Shiokake Natsu Matsuri)**: Starts around 17:00. The "Kemokaburi" ritual takes place around 18:30.
  • *Main Festival**: 08:00–21:00 (Includes Shinto rituals, portable shrine processions, seawater battles, and fireworks).
  • *Fireworks Display**: Starts around 20:45.

Venue & Access

The event takes place around Wagu Fishing Port and Wagu Oshima.

  • *By Public Transport**: From Kintetsu "Ubata Station," take the Sanco Bus (bound for Goza) for approximately 47 minutes, alight at "Wagu" bus stop, followed by a 3-minute walk.
  • *By Boat**: Use the Ago Bay regular ferry from Kashikojima Port, disembark at Wagu Port, and walk approximately 20 minutes.
  • *By Car**: Approximately 45 minutes via Route 167/260 from the Shiraki IC on the Daini-Ise Road.

Pro-Tips for Visitors

Expect to get very wet during the Shio-kake Kassen! We highly recommend wearing clothes that can get soaked and preparing for the water. Also, since the fireworks and evening events take place at night, keep an eye on the temperature change and bring a light layer.

What to Bring & Etiquette

  • *Clothing**: Wear clothes that are okay to get wet or made of quick-drying materials. A light jacket is also useful for watching the fireworks at night.
