Shiogama Minato Matsuri is a historic traditional event held annually in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture. It began in 1948 to pray for the economic prosperity of the port town and the revitalization of the community following the war. This festival is celebrated as one of Japan's "Three Great Boat Festivals," holding significant historical value and national recognition. The centerpiece of the festival is the "Mikoshi Kaijo Togi" (Sacred Shrine Sea Procession), where the portable shrines of Shiogama Jinja and Shibanoko Jinja are carried across the water. The sight of the magnificent ceremonial boats, known as Goza-bune, cruising through Shiogami Port is a rare and powerful spectacle. The entire city is enveloped in a festive atmosphere with lively parades celebrating local development and spectacular fireworks displays that light up the night sky.
