Event Overview

The Shiogama Jinja Hanote Matsuri is a significant ritual held annually on March 10th at Shiogama Jinja in Shiogama City, Miyagi Prefecture, signaling the arrival of spring in the Mutsu region. This festival originated as a "fire prevention festival" to pray for protection against fire and regional prosperity following a massive fire in 1682. While the ritual originally involved carrying a tool called a "Bonten," the tradition evolved into the current Mikoshi (sacred palanquin) style in 1733. Today, it is celebrated as one of Japan's three great "Aragami Mikoshi" (wild/fierce palanquin) festivals, captivating visitors with its intense energy.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The absolute highlight is the "Mikoshi Omotesaka Kudari" (Descent of the Mikoshi down the main slope). The main approach to Shiogama Jinja features a steep staircase of 202 stone steps. Here, 16 shrine followers dressed in white robes and eboshi hats carry a massive, 1-ton Mikoshi as it rushes down the incline. Known as an "Aragami" (wild/fierce deity) because the palanquin moves as if possessed by divine will, its unpredictable and powerful movements create an overwhelming sense of tension and excitement. Following the Mikoshi, a grand procession of over 500 elegantly dressed children (Chigo) and attendants adds a sense of grace and splendor to the festival.

The festival is held every year on March 10th. The main schedule for the day is as follows:

  • 10:00 Hon-den Sai (Main Shrine Ritual begins)
  • 11:00 Hakoshi Sai (Palanquin Departure Ceremony)
  • 11:30 Mikoshi Departure (Departure from the main slope)
  • 19:00 Kan-gyo (The Mikoshi returns to the shrine after circling the city)
