Shingu Noryosai is a traditional summer festival held at Fujitsu Hiko Jinja, located in Fujise, Nakajima-cho, Nanao City, Ishikawa Prefecture. Locally known as the "Natauchi no Osuzumi Matsuri," it is designated as a local intangible folk cultural property. The festival centers around the "Kiriko" (ornate ceremonial lanterns), a ritual deeply rooted in the Noto region and recognized as a Japan Heritage site. The main hall of Fujitsu Hiko Jinja is also a designated Important Cultural Property, allowing visitors to enjoy traditional rites within a profoundly historic atmosphere.
The most striking sight is the ethereal appearance of the Kiriko lanterns floating in the night darkness. Unlike modern light displays, these are illuminated by traditional candlelight, creating a flickering, soulful glow. The light dances against the unique boat-shaped crests at the top of the lanterns, offering a nostalgic charm found only in ancient traditions.
One of the most thrilling moments is the "Yose." Around 8:00 PM, the Kiriko lanterns from various districts charge toward the shrine's worship hall three times to pay respects to the deity. The tension is palpable as the heavy lanterns come to a sudden, precise halt just inches from the eaves of the hall, showcasing the incredible skill and bravery of the bearers. Following this, the procession moves toward the "Mizuotoshi" area with a portable shrine (Mikoshi) to perform the "Mimeguri" ritual, where the deity is said to enjoy the cool waters of the river.
The festival takes place on August 14. It begins in the evening and continues through the night.

Shingu Noryosai is a rare opportunity to witness the powerful Kiriko culture of Noto up close. The nighttime parade and the high-speed "Yose" charge are incredibly dynamic and impressive. While the candlelight is beautiful for photography, we recommend immersing yourself fully in the atmosphere and the rhythmic "Yansako" songs to truly feel the spirit of the festival.
As this is an outdoor nighttime event, please wear comfortable clothing suitable for the evening air. Since the area can be dark during the lantern parade, please be mindful of your footing.
