Event Overview

Shimoda Taiko Matsuri is the annual grand festival of Shimoda Hachiman Jinja, located in the heart of Shimoda City, Shizuoka. With a history spanning approximately 400 years, this high-energy event traces its origins to the ceremonial drum performances used when the Tokugawa clan entered Osaka Castle. Every year on August 14 and 15, the streets of Shimoda come alive with the rhythmic sounds of portable shrines (mikoshi) and heavy drum floats (taikodai), creating an atmosphere of pure excitement.

The absolute highlight of this festival is the 'Taiko-bashi,' a breathtaking moment where ceremonial tools are linked together to form a massive, majestic arch. This performance represents the climax of the festival and draws huge cheers from the crowd. As evening approaches, the streets are illuminated by the glow of lanterns from the ornate 'Taikodai' floats, accompanied by traditional music. On the night of August 14, approximately 560 fireworks will be launched near the Takegahama reclaimed area, creating a magical fusion of light and the deep, resonant sounds of the drums.

Schedule

August 14

• *Early Morning**: The ritual begins as the ceremonial attendants depart from the shrine.
• *After 10:00 AM**: The procession begins, featuring children's mikoshi, ceremonial tools, main mikoshi, and the taikodai floats.
• *Evening**: The mikoshi and ceremonial tools are settled at the 'Otabisho' near the mouth of the Nyunosawa River.
• *Night**: The 'Soroi-uchi' performance takes place, where the taikodai and traditional music unite, followed by a fireworks display near the Takegahama reclaimed area (scheduled for around 20:00).

August 15

• *After 9:00 AM**: The procession leaves the Otabisho to parade through the town once again.
• *Night**: The festival concludes as the children's mikoshi, ceremonial tools, and main mikoshi return to the Shimoda Hachiman Jinja shrine grounds after 20:00.
