As the grand finale of the Shimanto Citizen Festival, the Shimanto Citizen Festival Summer Fireworks Display is one of the most iconic summer events in Shimanto City, Kochi Prefecture. This festival marks the arrival of summer in the historic Nakamura area, featuring a breathtaking production where music and fireworks perform in perfect harmony. The sight of colorful fireworks reflecting on the surface of the Shimando River—often called the last clear stream in Japan—is a truly elegant and unforgettable spectacle.

Highlights & How to Enjoy

The main attraction is the synchronized music and fireworks performance over the Shimanto River. The light from the ascending fireworks reflects off the water, creating a dreamlike, ethereal atmosphere. Before the main fireworks display, visitors can enjoy local cultural programs, including dance performances by local high school students, brass band music, and the award ceremony for the "Nakamura Odori and Shimanto Lantern Parade."

Schedule

The event is held annually in late August. The typical schedule is as follows:

  • 16:30–17:30: High School Dance Club Performance
  • 17:30–18:30: High School Brass Band Performance
  • 18:30–19:00: Lucky Draw (with sponsored tickets)
  • 19:00–19:30: Nakamura Odori & Shimanto Lantern Parade Award Ceremony
  • 20:00–20:30: Fireworks Display

Venue & Access

The venue is the Shimanto River Matsuri Hiroba (the riverside area near the Akatetsu Bridge).

  • *Access**: Approximately 5 minutes by car from Nakamura Station.
  • *Important Note**: Viewing is NOT permitted on the walkways of the Akatetsu Bridge or the Watari River Bridge. Please use the designated riverside plaza area for viewing.
