The Sendai Tanabata Festival is one of Japan's most prestigious traditional events, held primarily in the shopping districts of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. As one of the three major festivals of the Tohoku region, it attracts massive crowds every year. The highlight is the magnificent "Tanabata decorations" made of beautiful Washi paper, which serve as a quintessential symbol of summer in Sendai. This festival is not just a seasonal event but a vital piece of local cultural heritage.
The main attraction is the spectacular "Nanatsu-kazari" (seven decorations) suspended from the ceilings of the shopping arcades. These intricate displays consist of seven elements: streamers, paper clothing, paper cranes, pouches, nets, baskets, and large colorful streamers, each carrying special wishes. The delicate designs utilizing the texture of Washi paper are truly mesmerizing. In some areas, you may even see traditional mechanical displays, adding to the nostalgic charm of the festival.
The festival is held annually over three days, centered around August 7th (typically from August 6th to August 8th). On the eve of the main event, around August 5th, the Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival is sometimes held. The event always takes place in early August.
The main venue consists of the shopping arcades in central Sendai (such as Ichibancho and Chuo-dori). Access via train is highly recommended as it is very convenient.
The festival is a wonderful way to feel the energy of Japanese tradition alongside the lively atmosphere of the shopping streets. Because it is extremely crowded, we recommend visiting during weekday daytime or off-peak hours if you wish to view the decorations more peacefully.
