The Sendai Tanabata Fireworks Festival is a premier large-scale event held in the heart of Sendai City, Miyagi Prefecture. Originally established in 1970 as the eve of the famous "Sendai Tanabata Matsuri," this festival has a rich history spanning over half a century. It is now renowned as a massive urban fireworks display, launching approximately 16,000 shells. The 2026 theme, "HOPE β Flowers of the Future Blooming Together," reflects the resilience and spirit of Sendai, casting the city's hopes and dreams into the night sky through every burst of light. It is a vital cultural milestone that signals the true beginning of summer in Sendai.
The greatest draw is the stunning contrast between the everyday cityscape and the overwhelming light filling the sky. This is a unique "urban fireworks" experience where the 16,000 shells interact with the silhouettes of buildings, the surface of the Hirose River, and the scenic landscapes around Aoba-yama Park. The display lasts about 60 minutes, offering a breathtaking spectacle that changes with every angle of view. As the opening celebration for the Sendai Tanabata Matsuri starting the following day, the entire city is filled with an infectious sense of excitement and celebration.
The event will be held on Wednesday, August 5, 2026. The fireworks are scheduled to launch from 19:30 to 20:30 (approximately 60 minutes). Please note that the event will proceed in light rain, but may be canceled in the event of severe weather or high winds.
The display covers the area around Aoba-yama Park in Aoba-ku, the Hirose River banks, and the Sendai Campus area. There are two types of viewing areas available:
While the venues are within walking distance of various subway stations, the area becomes extremely crowded. We highly recommend using public transportation.
This is a massive event that attracts approximately 450,000 spectators annually. Because it is difficult to secure a good view in the free viewing areas, we strongly recommend considering the pre-booked paid seating options for a guaranteed view. Since this is an urban display, choosing a vantage point that allows you to see the interaction between the fireworks and the city skyline will enhance your experience.
As this is a summer night event, please prepare for the heat and bring items like portable fans or insect repellent. Be mindful of the crowds and the noise and smoke produced by the fireworks. For ticket purchases and specific seat details, please check the official website in advance, as information regarding ticket-buying methods is updated regularly.
